Proof of ownership and proof of source at Kraken, BISON and Bitpanda

The exchange wants to know whether the wallet is yours. The bank wants to know where the money came from. These are two different proofs. Choose your exchange and your goal below and click through step by step, using the menu paths from the exchanges' own help centres.

Key points
  • Proof of ownership: from €1,000 per transfer to or from a self-hosted wallet, exchanges must check the address is yours (Regulation (EU) 2023/1113): signature, Satoshi test or self-declaration; in individual cases support asks for screenshots instead. Provide only what is requested.
  • Proof of source: for a bank, notary or tax office you need the closed chain from your bank account through the exchange to the withdrawal. Exchanges provide exports and statements, not a ready-made certificate.
  • A wallet check proves control of an address, not the source of funds.
  • Sort out your tax position before exporting: the export discloses your whole history.

Click-through guide

Three exchanges, two goals; for wallet proof you also choose the method the exchange is asking for. Menu labels are quoted as the exchanges name them in their help centres; BISON and Bitpanda document German labels.

Kraken · Proof of ownership · Self-certification (click + code)

Step 1 of 3

When Kraken asks for proof

For deposits and withdrawals above €1,000 to or from a private wallet you have to show the wallet is yours. This is needed only once per address; the address is then whitelisted. Kraken decides case by case which method it offers: self-certification, a Satoshi test or a digital signature.

The exchange tells you which method applies. Provide exactly that – a Satoshi test, for example, only if it is requested.

Step 2 of 3

Deposit from your own wallet

Email from Krakenlink to the verification page“Private Wallet”choose method

Kraken holds the deposit and emails you a link. There you state that the funds come from a private wallet and choose self-certification (one click plus security code) or a Satoshi test. Kraken then releases the deposit and remembers the sending address.

Step 3 of 3

Security, and what the proof does not do

Kraken never asks for your recovery phrase and never asks for a payment to release funds. Genuine emails come only from @kraken.com. Pages that ask you to connect your wallet and then approve a transaction can drain it.

According to its help articles Kraken issues no downloadable verification certificate. Note the address, date and method. The proof shows control of the address, not where the money came from.

Step 2 of 5

Withdrawal: Satoshi test

Start withdrawal to private walletSatoshi test (if offered)“I’ve made the deposit”“Next”

Kraken shows a verification address and an exact small amount. Send exactly that amount from exactly the address being verified within 180 minutes. Two-factor authentication must be set up. Kraken refunds the network fee as a fee credit (KFEE), subject to daily limits.

Important: after a successful test you have to place the withdrawal again.

Step 3 of 5

Deposit from your own wallet

Email from Krakenlink to the verification page“Private Wallet”choose method

Kraken holds the deposit and emails you a link. There you state that the funds come from a private wallet and choose self-certification (one click plus security code) or a Satoshi test. Kraken then releases the deposit and remembers the sending address.

Step 4 of 5

If verification fails

Failed checks can be repeated. If the Satoshi test expires after 180 minutes, the address is not whitelisted and withdrawals to it require a new successful test.

Step 2 of 4

Alternative: digital signature

Choose wallet provider (e.g. MetaMask, Trust Wallet)connect via Reownsign message

You connect your wallet via Reown (formerly WalletConnect) and sign a message generated by Kraken. No coins move and no network fee is due. EVM wallets are supported; for Bitcoin and Solana wallets the app redirects to the web version.

Kraken · Proof of source

Step 1 of 7

Tax first, export second

A full export discloses your entire trading history. If it shows gains that were never declared, the document meant to keep your account open can start a tax procedure. Check first whether every year has been filed correctly.

Why the order matters

Step 2 of 7

Open the Document Center

kraken.com (web)name or profile icon top right“Documents”

Create all exports on the web under “Documents”, direct link kraken.com/c/account-settings/documents. The app path is not described in the help centre, so use a browser.

In Kraken Pro: profile icon › “Statements” › “Export statement”.

Step 3 of 7

Export the ledger – the core

“New export”“Ledger”start and end datePDF or CSV“Generate”

The ledger lists all deposits, withdrawals, trades and fees with timestamps (UTC). The request shows as “Queued”; once the download icon is active, download the file.

Exports take from a few minutes to up to a week, without an email notification. Files stay available for 14 days. Split long periods by year.

Source: Kraken: Download or request documents (16.04.2026) · Kraken: Export processing time

Step 4 of 7

Balance and account statement

“New export”“Balances” (one date) or “Account statement” (period, currency)“Generate”

“Balances” shows holdings on a given date, as PDF or CSV. “Account statement” is a PDF statement. For the bank, use the balance on the date of its request; for the chain, the statement for the whole period.

Source: Kraken: Download or request documents (16.04.2026)

Step 5 of 7

Add addresses and transaction IDs

Kraken Pro“Portfolio”“Spot”“Funding transactions”

The ledger contains no blockchain addresses or transaction IDs. For the last three months you find them in Kraken Pro; for older transfers use a public block explorer.

Banks need exactly these details to match deposits and withdrawals.

Source: Kraken: Ledger history does not include addresses or hashes

Step 6 of 7

Request a letter from Kraken

Form “Account letters request” (after sign-in)

The form lets you request an account confirmation, withdrawal/deposit information or a balance confirmation.

The help centre does not say whether these letters are signed or how long they take. Ask your bank first what exactly it needs.

Source: Kraken: Download or request documents (16.04.2026)

Step 7 of 7

The package for your bank or notary

The reviewing party wants a closed chain: where the money came from (bank statement showing the transfer from your own account), how it went into crypto (exchange export), what happened in between (transfers with addresses and transaction IDs), how it was paid out and what it is used for. One exchange's exports are only part of that chain.

Step 2 of 3

Support asks for a screenshot

email or ticket from BISON supportscreenshot of the sending walletreply

According to its help centre BISON requests screenshots by email in individual cases. In one case from our practice, support asked – for transfers of around €50,000 in total – for a screenshot of the sending wallet showing the name and the sending and receiving addresses. No Satoshi test was requested.

Show the full screen, do not crop. No seed phrase, PIN or passwords in the image. Reply only through the exchange's ticket or email, never via third-party upload pages. Keep a copy for your own records.

Source: BISON: Travel Rule / ToFR

Step 3 of 3

If the wallet does not show your name

Many wallets show no name. Ask support how the name should be evidenced, for example via the account view of the exchange the coins came from. Do not volunteer more than is requested.

A screenshot only shows that some device displayed the address. It is weaker than a signature and does not prove the source of funds.

Deposit blocked?

transaction historyrejected transactionreturn to sender

A deposit without successful verification is held. Restart the verification or send the coins back. Before the first crypto deposit from another platform Bitpanda requires a fiat deposit of at least €10.

Bitpanda issues no verification certificate; the proof shows control of the address, not the source of funds.

Bitpanda · Proof of ownership · Support emails a request for documents

Step 1 of 3

When Bitpanda asks for proof

notice “Wallet verifizieren” / “Verify wallet” (email, push or in-app)

As soon as deposits and withdrawals via the same unverified address reach €1,000 in total. Each address counts separately, so Bitcoin wallets that generate a new address per transaction trigger it more often. Bitpanda only pays out to your own wallets.

The exchange tells you which method applies. Provide exactly that – a Satoshi test, for example, only if it is requested.

Support asks for documents

email from Bitpanda supportrequested documentsreply via the ticket

Besides the wallet verification Bitpanda may request evidence. For source of funds it names screenshots of purchase and withdrawal confirmations showing account ID, wallet addresses and transaction IDs. Provide exactly what is requested.

Show the full screen, do not crop. No seed phrase, PIN or passwords in the image. Reply only through the exchange's ticket or email, never via third-party upload pages. Keep a copy for your own records.

Step 2 of 2

Not sure yet? This is how you find out

Start the deposit or withdrawal as usual. From €1,000 the exchange shows you which method it requires, or emails you. Then come back and choose that method here.

Do not prepare anything nobody has asked for – in particular no Satoshi test.

Bitpanda · Proof of source

Step 1 of 7

Tax first, export second

A full export discloses your entire trading history. If it shows gains that were never declared, the document meant to keep your account open can start a tax procedure. Check first whether every year has been filed correctly.

Why the order matters

Step 2 of 7

Download the transaction history

“Reports and Statements”“Transaction history”period and format (CSV or PDF)download

The export covers buys, sells and transactions in crypto and fiat for the chosen period.

An older article describes avatar › “History” › “Export”. Bitpanda states that the files are for information purposes only.

Step 3 of 7

Account statements

“Reports and Statements”quarterly statements

Bitpanda creates quarterly statements automatically. An annual statement is available only on request from support.

Step 4 of 7

No tax report for Germany

The tax report under “Tax Reports” is offered only in Austria. For Germany Bitpanda refers to statements, transaction history and its Blockpit integration.

Step 5 of 7

What Bitpanda itself accepts as source of funds

When Bitpanda asks, it wants documents showing account ownership, transaction history and purchase, withdrawal or swap confirmations: screenshots with account ID, wallet addresses and transaction IDs, bank statements for fiat investments, and for mining proof of equipment plus screenshots of the mining platform. The list doubles as a checklist for your bank.

Documents cannot be submitted in advance. Without proof, Bitpanda pays out the remaining holdings after review and deactivates the account.

Step 6 of 7

Close the gaps

A balance confirmation or bank letter, and bank details (IBAN) in exports, are not described in the help centre. Keep the bank statements of your deposits yourself and ask support if needed.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between proof of ownership and proof of source?
Proof of ownership shows the exchange that a self-hosted wallet is yours or under your control. Under Regulation (EU) 2023/1113 exchanges must check this for transfers above €1,000 to or from a self-hosted wallet. Proof of source shows where the money came from; banks, notaries and exchanges ask for it under anti-money-laundering law.
Do I always have to do a Satoshi test?
No. The exchange decides which method applies and shows it during the deposit or withdrawal. Provide a Satoshi test only if it is requested. In one case from our practice BISON support instead asked – for transfers of around €50,000 in total – for a screenshot of the sending wallet showing the name and the sending and receiving addresses.
Is a Satoshi test or signature enough as source of funds for my bank?
No. Both only show that you control an address today. They say nothing about when the coins were acquired or where the money came from. For the bank they are one link in the chain: tying the wallet to you.
Does the exchange issue a certificate for the wallet check?
According to the help centres of Kraken, BISON and Bitpanda, no. Note the address, date and method yourself.
Does an exchange ever need my seed phrase?
No. Neither proof requires your recovery phrase or a private key. Anyone asking for it wants to drain your wallet.
